Tri-Fold Design

What is the key to a successful tri-fold design? In this section, we highlight the most important criteria for obtaining a high-impact tri-fold design:

1) Text

The text of the tri-fold is distributed among the six panels, which constitute the brochure. Thus, in the front panel, it is important to present a catchy and memorable phrase in addition to the logo and the name of a company. In the last external panel, the contact information in visible form should be provided. What concerns the first internal panel, it is crucial to describe the advantages of a company’s products or services persuasively. The contact details should be given as well. In the other two internal panels, it is important to present a clear, explicative and synthetic content about a company.

2) Fonts

The fonts that are chosen for the tri-folds have to combine legibility with elegance and style, given that, for example, unlike flyers, the tri-folds are the pieces of longer durability and useful life. Therefore, apart from opting for clearly visible fonts, it is fundamental to choose fonts, which will fully represent the corporate identity.

3) Images

One of the ways to make a tri-fold look attractive is to include a selected quantity of images representative of a company. It is convenient to present the images and/or illustrations of products and services, as well as those of facilities and staff. Besides, not so literal images, which can reflect the company’s personality, can be chosen. In any case, there has to be a coherence in the combination of the selected photos as well as between them and the rest of graphic elements. On the other hand, it is crucial to include the logo of the company.

4) Panels o sides

A professional designer knows that for the consolidation of a company’s image by means of a tri-fold, it is indispensable that its different panels create a harmonious unity. It means that while working on the layout, fonts, colors, lines and other graphic elements, a designer should keep in mind a homogeneity criterion.

The front panel with a high-impact phrase should have a very attractive design. The interior panels do not have to be overloaded with components, and it is recommended to use a white background, which facilitates reading. It is useful to include summary tables, boxing and computer graphics in order to highlight information and explain the content. Also, a designer cannot forget about the photos /illustrations of company products, nor about its facilities and staff.

5) Colors

The full color tri-folds are the best alternative, given that they are an affordable option, producing incredible results. The use of corporate colors will help the company’s identity to sink into the public’s mind. Undoubtedly, although the use of multiple colors can make a brochure look extremely attractive, the saturation and excessive use of colors should be avoided. An effective design is simple, as a starting point. It is also possible to create tri-folds in black and white or with the addition of one more color, and although these colors themselves are not attractive, a good design can make them look superb.

6) Folding

The tri-folds are the brochures, where the folding is of vital importance. Designers can experiment with the ways of folding a tri-fold, searching for novel forms. The only criterion, which should not be forgotten, is its practicality and convenience for distributing and handling. A traditional tri-fold is folded three times to form a flattened roll. In this case, the brochure is closed. This way of folding is the most popular due to its effectiveness in the process of distribution (it does not open and it does not wear out easily).

It is also possible to fold a tri-fold into the Z-like shape, which usually draws the attention of the recipients, who feel tempted to extend the brochure sheet and to read the content. A tri-fold with parallel folds is another good option: the sheet of paper is folded to form “gates” (gate-fold), where the external panels face each other (closed gate-fold) or lie in the same plane (open-gate-fold). Once again, this way of folding sparks the curiosity and invites people to read more about a company. In all cases, a designer can experiment with vertical or horizontal arrangement of design and folding. In addition to these options, every designer can come up with his own ways of folding, turning on his creativity and practical sense.
